Puppy Adoption Criteria

Because we love our dogs, we're very careful where they go and potential puppy parents can expect to be thoroughly questioned about their knowledge of the Rottweiler breed and their fitness to care properly for them.

Rottweilers are definitely not for everyone. The fact that you are knowledgeable about dogs in general does not qualify you to own a Rottweiler. If you are new to the breed, be prepared to spend time with us and get educated about the do's and don'ts during the very important initial training months.

If you are interested in one of our puppies, please be aware that there are certain standards prospective owners must meet before we'll agree to place a puppy with them.

  1. Rottweilers have a very strong mind and will of their own.  However, they would stake their lives to do whatever you wish, provided you assert yourself as their leader and boss.  The intelligent Rottweiler recognizes and respects leadership.  If you feel you lack leadership skills, you may wish to reconsider owning this breed.

  2. Rottweilers are incredibly intelligent, and adult Rotties possess the emotional maturity of a seven year old child.  They require a both a boss and a job.  If you are not prepared to spend the time to educate them properly from the moment you get them, do not consider owning one.  Their ill-deserved reputation is due to bad owners - not bad dogs.

  3. While Winn's Hill Rottweilers have had incredible success in the show ring, our main goal in breeding is to place healthy Rottweilers into loving and responsible homes.  Meanwhile, we encourage new owners to take their puppies to shows (we will happily provide you with show dates and information), because we have found the show environment to be the very best place to socialize one's puppy, and to gain both expert correction and advice on raising well-balanced healthy and loving companions.

  4. We require new prospective owners to take their puppy to at least five sessions of obedience class by a certified instructor before we sign ownership papers. This requirement is as much for the owner's benefit as it is for the dog's.  It provides for a bonding environment that would never happen elsewhere or otherwise.  If the prospective owner does not have the time for this responsibility, they do not have the time for a Rottweiler.

  5. All puppies born at Winns Hill, are eligible for boarding here at any time for $10.00 a day.  We are not a boarding kennel, but we do not wish to see our dogs at kennel facilities that do not understand or respect the breed.

We have lived with Rottweilers for 40 years. Our dogs have been blessed with an unequal record of good health, looks, and temperament, which we wish to preserve. While we don't have all the answers, we can at least point you in the right direction.  We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by phone and e-mail to answer any of your questions.
